Design for How People Learn:
Advancing Your Practice

Learning and development shouldn’t be about helping people know more; it should be about helping people do more. Too often the focus of learning design is to deliver information, but we need better strategies for skill development and motivation.  Traditional instructional design models focus a great deal on process steps, but very little on actionable design principles based on the science of learning.

This workshop will provide a straightforward, evidence-based framework for sharpening up your instructional design practice, including:

  • Analysis strategies that let you identify learning gaps and match them to the most effective interventions – when should you use a particular format or technology?
  • Mapping a complete learning experience that includes skill development and practice opportunities – how do we develop skills over time?
  • Identifying and designing for motivational issues – how do we attract and retain learners’ attention and effort?
  • Strategies for improving your design process, and ways to better work with stakeholders – how can we make the design process smoother and more effective?
  • Evidence-based rationales – how can you use research into the science of learning to design and justify your learning programs?
