Honoring Talent Leaders during Black History Month
|
Now, more than ever, it is important to create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace for organizations to ensure we are attaining and retaining the BEST Talent. This requires demonstrating – in actions, words, commitment, and accountability – that DIVERSITY of all types is welcomed. Honoring the achievements of African Americans/Blacks should be a celebration of your team members and their ancestral contributions to our history.
What Talent Leaders Can Do:
- Say and Email “Happy Black History Month” – a great way to start the day, even if you do not have any African Americans that work for you
- When developing training – diversify your characters, imagery, names, and scenarios
- Promote local and national Black History Month awareness
- Support Black-owned businesses
- Become a member of a Black organization
- Host a Book Club reading Black authors
- Plan an interactive virtual event celebrating African American or Black contributions to society, or individuals on your teams
- Debut your action plan to address DE&I for your organization
- Encourage cultural dialogue and discussion in virtual table talks
- Be intentional and actionable about diversifying your vendors and suppliers
- Solicit feedback from your teams on how the organization can be more diverse, and communicate that to your recruitment teams

Designing to Wow by Esther Matthews
|
The late legendary designer, Milton Glaser, once said “There are three responses to a piece of design – yes, no, and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for.”
While Glaser was specifically referencing visual designers, I believe there’s a lesson in his statement for talent development professionals as well. We design employee experiences that transform others. Whether that’s through guiding or developing them along their career paths, laying out the framework for their progression, helping them develop the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities, or something else - our work is nothing short of transformative. Shouldn’t the transformative experiences that we design for our audiences “wow” them as well?

Each month a member-selected book will be read and discussed online every one month. Some books will be bestsellers and highlight industry trailblazers. Some will be less famous works the executive board thinks you will love. Each will be discussed in an hour interactive session led by the book’s author. You are responsible for getting a copy of the book to read or listen to but we will provide a chapter, upon registration, for the live discussion.
