Why Acknowledging Black History is Crucial for Creating a Diverse Workplace

Black history is a significant aspect of our collective past that has helped shape the world as we know it today. It highlights the contributions and accomplishments of African Americans and provides a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage. In talent development, it is crucial to acknowledge and appreciate the significance of black history to foster a more inclusive and diverse work environment. Recognizing black history in the workplace can help employees feel valued and respected, regardless of their background. When individuals feel valued and included, they are more likely to bring their best selves to work, leading to improved job satisfaction and higher levels of engagement. This can lead to increased productivity and better overall organizational performance.

Hybrid Training – Are You Ready?

By Leigh Anne Lankford, Instructional Designer, TrainingPros President

Recently, I attended two different training sessions that had both in-person participants and virtual participants. In other words – Hybrid Training. Both training sessions had many things go terribly wrong! As an L&D professional, I felt terrible for the facilitators, but as a student in the class, I was irritated and quite distracted.

So what went wrong?

In the first session, the facilitator was in the room with about 30 of us. In addition, there were about 20 participants online. The topic was of real interest to me. Technology was the problem in this session. The online participants missed sporadic portions of the class due to connection issues and kept asking the facilitator to repeat sections because they missed it. The constant stop-start-rewind was a big interruption of the facilitator’s “flow”. In addition, it limited the engagement levels of those of us in person and I suspect the same for the online participants. An interesting topic was ruined by one of the pitfalls of Hybrid Learning.

In the second session, the facilitator appeared to us virtually as were about 30 participants. I was attending the session in-person in a packed room with about 50 other participants. Obviously, this was a very popular topic and we were there to learn. Unfortunately, in this instance, the failure was due to the difficulties balancing two different audiences at the same time. The facilitator was giving us questions to answer but she really only paid attention to the online participants. Those of us in-person quickly stopped answering because our answers were ignored. This definitely decreased our engagement with the content and the facilitator.
