Turning our Blind Spots into Optimism: The Top 10 Blind Spots for Learning Professionals

Presenter

Will Thalheimer

Work-Learning Research, Inc.

We work in a noble profession—helping people learn—but it’s increasingly a very complex endeavor. Do you ever feel like you’re bombarded with more good advice than you can use as a trainer, instructional designer, elearning developer, or chief learning officer? Stop worrying and simplify! One of the best ways to do this is to focus on things that really matter. In this session, Will Thalheimer, noted learning strategist, will take us on a journey inspired by his 17-year journey investigating the learning research to find the most leverageable learning factors. He’ll address blind spots we may have in learning design, learning measurement, and learning management. By correcting these oversights, we can raise the bar on our effectiveness and drive maximum learning results—all the while enjoying a bit more calm and optimism.

Will Thalheimer is a learning expert, researcher, instructional designer, speaker, and writer. Dr. Thalheimer has worked in the learning-and-performance field since 1985. He was the project manager for the first commercially-viable computer-based leadership simulation, The Complete Manager, back in 1986. He was project manager and simulation architect for Classroom, Inc., building simulations to teach at-risk high-school students. In 1998, Dr. Thalheimer founded Work-Learning Research to bridge the gap between research and practice, to compile research on learning, and disseminate research findings. His clients have included giant multinationals, e-learning companies, government agencies, and institutions of higher learning.

He makes his research-to-practice reports available for free on the Work-Learning Research Catalog (www.work-learning.com/catalog.html). He also shares his wisdom and experience through keynote addresses, conference presentations, published articles, Twitter (@WillWorkLearn), and through his industry-leading blog (www.WillAtWorkLearning.com).

His recent publication reviewing the research on the “Decisive Dozen – The Most Important Learning Factors” is available on the Work-Learning Research Catalog or at the following URL: (is.gd/DDResearchPDF).

Will holds a BA from the Pennsylvania State University, an MBA from Drexel University, and a PhD in Educational Psychology: Human Learning and Cognition from Columbia University. He lives in Somerville, Massachusetts, with his wife, daughter, and shepherd mix.
